And I And Silence
by Naomi Wallace

The William Inge Memorial Theatre

Horton Foote Prize-winning playwright Naomi Wallace sits ugliness and beauty side-by-side in the racially charged world of 1950s America. Inspired by Emily Dickinson's poetry, And I and Silence explores the friendship and hardships of African-American Jamie and white working-class Dee who meet while serving prison sentences as teenagers. Nine years after release, the two realize that the bars erected by prejudice and segregation cannot be navigated alone—they need each other for support and encouragement in order to survive. Director Lynn Deboeck examines female friendship and unspoken love with humor and grace as the women attempt to transcend their surroundings. The 2011 premier production of And I and Silence at the Finborough Theatre in London received outstanding reviews and was named to several critics' choice lists.

Directed by Lynn Deboeck
