March Madness*

by Darren Canady

March 24, 2021, 7:00 p.m.
A script-in-hand reading
Livestreamed from the Elizabeth Sherbon Theatre

*This performance is not related to the NCAA, the NCAA basketball tournaments, nor sponsored by the NCAA.

Inspired by recent events on college campuses across the country, and those surrounding the 2015 University of Missouri football strike in particular, this work-in-progress depicts the human gains and costs of struggling for social justice. When students of color at a large public university with a championship banner-laden basketball program challenge the administration to address racial bias and intimidation on campus, the players–some of whom are “one-and-dones” who could potentially be stars at the professional level–have to decide if a call for justice is worth jeopardizing their reputations as players and future careers with the NBA.

Directed by Alysha Griffin
Stage Management by Bailey Dobbins

Cast: Elsa Bernauer, Anthony Boynton, Tehreem Chaudhry,
Jeremiah Coleman, Dominique Lorae, Joey Moreno
Jenny Sledge Harris, Gabrielle Smith, Kaitlyn Tossie,
and Jack Wright
