Goodnight, Tyler by B.J. Tindal is a dark comedy about race, grief, and discovering what’s really important in life. From the land of the living, and of the deceased–after being killed in a police shooting–Tyler navigates relationships that cross intersections of identity and race, searching for agency in his death. Tyler’s story, buoyed by magical realism, is a hauntingly real reflection of our time and touches on the many facets of what decides if “you come back home on any given day.” Layered with the complexity of societal expectations, how we care about others, and what it means to live life with radical joy, Goodnight, Tyler puts it all out on the table–especially in the case of the grandma who raised him–but the main message is clear: remember Tyler for who he was, not how he died.
